Chapter Summary

This chapter offers letters on a book that caused Lady Ethel Stefana Drower much re-work and pain: Water into Wine (WW). A Study of Ritual Idiom in the Middle East (= WW). Originally, this comparative work on ritual, especially on the Christian Mass and its relationship to seasonal Near Eastern rituals, included a large section on Judaism. Letters concerning her WW manuscript (it has various versions) begin in 1944 while Drower is in Iraq, and end years after Drower's death. Published by John Murray, London, 1956, the book had a tortuous path toward its realization. An early (undated) Table of Contents of Water into Wine.
