Chapter Summary

Azerbaijan is not a member of the European Union, and is a member of the Council of Europe since 25 January 2001. This chapter commences with the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan of 12 November 1995, as amended up to 2002. It presents the human rights related legislation, including the law on freedom of religious belief of 1992, as amended up to 1997, and the law on freedom of assembly of 1998, as amended up to 2008. The chapter also includes the penal code provisions and provisions on non-discrimination. Finally, it describes the provisions on equality bodies/ombudsman, including Constitutional law on the human rights commissioner (Ombudsman) of 2001, as amended up to 2010.
