Chapter Summary

Bulgaria has been a member of the European Union since January 2007 and of the Council of Europe since 1992. This chapter describes the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria of 13 July 1991, as amended up to February 2007. It presents human rights related legislation, including the law on religious confessions of 2002. Then, it describes the penal code provisions, including criminal code of 1968, as amended up to 2010. Finally, the chapter discusses the provisions on non-discrimination, including labour code of 2002, as amended up to 2006, and protection against discrimination act of 2003, as amended up to 2006, and the provisions on equality bodies/ombudsman.
