Chapter Summary

The Czech Republic has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1993, and of the European Union since 2004. This chapter commences with the constitutional provisions, Charter of Fundamental Rights and Basic Freedoms of 1993, as Amended up to 2002. Next, the chapter presents Human Rights Related Legislation, which includes the Citizens Civil Law Associations Act of 1990, Act on the Freedom of Religious Faith and the Position of Churches and Religious Societies of 1991, Law on Association in Political Parties and Political Movements of 1991, as Amended up to 2006, and Law Against Support and Dissemination of Movements Oppressing Human Rights and Freedoms of 2001. Included in penal code provisions and non-discrimination, is the Federal Act Governing Equal Treatment of 2004 and the Anti-Discrimination Act of 2008, respectively. Finally the chapter ends with equality bodies/ombudsman and the Act on the Public Defender of Rights (Ombudsman) of 1999.
