Chapter Summary

The Holy See was granted observer status with the Council of Europe since 1970. It is not a member of the European Union. The Vatican City State was established as a sovereign state in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Italy, which was incorporated into the Italian Constitution in 1947. The Code of Canon Law was first promulgated on 27 May 1917 and last amended in 15 December 2009. This chapter commences with the constitutional provisions, New Fundamental Law of 26 November 2000 which comprises of article 1 and article 18 and the Law on the Sources of the Law of 2008 which comprises of article 1 and article 3 which talk about Main law sources and Reception of Italian legislation. Finally the chapter presents the agreements containing Fundamental Agreement Between the Holy See and the State of Israel of 1993.
