Chapter Summary

Latvia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1995, and of the European Union since 2004. This chapter commences with the constitutional provisions, the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia of 1922, as amended up to 8 April 2009. Next the chapter presents human rights related legislation which includes Declaration on Condemnation and Prohibition of Genocide and Anti-Semitism in Latvia of September 1990, Law on the Press and Other Mass Media of 1990, as Amended up to 1997 and Law on Public Organizations and Associations of 1992, as Amended up to 2004 . Then, the chapter presents penal code provisions and Non-Discrimination, which includes Penal Code of 1998, as Amended up to 2009 and Labour Law of 2001, as Amended up to 2004 respectively. Finally the chapter presents the protection of minorities and the equality bodies / ombudsman.
