Chapter Summary

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1995. This chapter commences with the constitutional provisions, the relevant provisions of the Constitution of Macedonia of 8 September 1991, as amended up to 2005. Next the chapter presents human rights related legislation and the penal code which includes Law on the Legal Status of Churches, Religious Communities, and Religious Groups of 2008 and Criminal Code of 1996, as Amended up to 2009. Then, the chapter presents non-discrimination and Protection of minorities which includes the Law on Prevention and Protection Against Discrimination of 2010 for non discrimination and Law on Religious Communities and Religious Groups of 1997, Law on the Usage of the Macedonian Language of 1998 for the protection of minorities. Finally the chapter presents the equality bodies / ombudsman which includes The Law on the Ombudsman of 2003.
