Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter of the book illustrates the relationship between the Institutes and Calvin's commentaries. The contributions to this book is clustered around the theme of the restoration of fallen creation through the redemption by Christ. The first part of the volume analyzes several topics in Calvin's theology, related to the redemptive work of Christ. The study of Calvin's thought on the trinity, on the knowledge of God, on sin, on the Christian life, and on politics contributes to the historical understanding of Calvin's theology. The second part of the volume covers a range of issues for reformed systematic theology: creation and natural suffering, Christ's descent into hell and physics, spirituality in an ecumenical ecclesial context and the relevance of Calvin's sacramental and eschatological theology. The third part turns particularly to the reception of Calvin's theology in Reformed churches world-wide. The volume concludes by commenting on French Protestantism.
