Chapter Summary

This appendix presents a note on contributors to painting manual from the hall of hoeing fragrance, a note on translation of texts from painting manual from the hall of hoeing fragrance, an English preface to painting album of flowers and birds, and a note on translation of preface to order of colours relevant to the study of Sinophile Culture in Meiji Japan. The arts of painting and engraving have come down to us from ancient times. Among specimens of these arts that have been preserved, the pictures of some Buddhist divinities painted on the walls of the oratory of a temple situated in Yamato, known as the Hōryūji, are very remarkable. These paintings are some thirteen hundred years old, having been executed in the reign of the Emperor Sushun.
