Chapter Summary

A decade after the 1970 massacres, it was Edward Gierek’s turn to be ejected from power by the workers. Their insistence on an independent union effectively constituted a revolutionary challenge to the regime. How did they get there? How were their experiences combined to create a broader understanding of December 1970 and to learn how to build an opposition? This chapter addresses these and other such questions. During the 1970s the workers became increasingly sophisticated in conspiracy. They learned not to give information when they were detained because within 48 hours the police would have to release them. In the period leading up to the 1980 strikes, individuals were developing reputations in their workplaces and beyond. In Upper Silesia two workers proclaimed a Founding Committee for Free Trade Unions. Ryszard Sawicki helped lead a strike in the Rudna copper mine in Lower Silesia.
