Chapter Summary

Essentially, Arabic compilation of theology, the Book of the causes appeared in the ninth century. It retains the text of Proclus division theoremata and "demonstrations" according to the divisions between twenty-nine and thirty-three short proposals. It was translated from Arabic into Latin by Gerard of Cremona between 1167 and 1187 and three times in the Latin Hebrew: 1) by Hillel of Verona, probably after 1260; 2) by Judah Romano, Italy, during the first quarter of the fourteenth century; 3) in Spain, by Eli Habilio in, or shortly before, in 1477. In addition, the Paris manuscript in Hebrew contains 706 independent translation of the previous "theorems" without the "demonstrations". He distinguishes between two layers of translation, involving a revision with a Latin manuscript other than the original model. Indeed, the split or fusion was observed between the prop. 4 and 5. A comprehensive search of the traces of the causes of the Book in the medieval Jewish thought should systematically explore later literature in Hebrew translations.

Keywords: Book of the causes; Hebrew translations; Latin manuscript; medieval Jewish thought; Proclus division.
