Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses representations of Indonesian film history of the New Order and the film genres which represented its ideologies and discourses about the past. It focuses on two specific time-bound genres, which typified New Order rule and historiography: film perjuangan and film pembangunan. As well as promoting its development policy through film, the regime used propaganda films to present its version of national history. Both the production and distribution of films which featured propaganda messages had been part of the mediascape ever since the medium of film entered Indonesia. The chapter then analyses the 'frames' and practice of 'framing' films connected to the concept of 'film in the framework of'. It covers the most extreme example of the practice of framing a film under the New Order: the role of the film G30S/PKI as part of the annual celebration of the Hari Peringatan Kesaktian Pancasila (Hapsak).

Keywords: film pembangunan; film perjuangan; G30S/PKI; Hari Peringatan Kesaktian Pancasila (Hapsak); Indonesian film history; New Order
