Chapter Summary

This chapter provides concluding comments for the book Contemporary Indonesian Film, which explores historically emergent forms of representation and imagination of communities in the Indonesian audio-visual mediascape. New Order history films, development films, and propaganda films featured heroes, the blessings of modernization, and the opposition of 'evil' communism versus 'good' Islam. The author's analysis about what narrative practices have been possible and permissible in the post-Soeharto Indonesian audio-visual media ties into a struggle over who and what shapes and decides on national popular discourse and the realities of imaginations of society's daily-lived practices. It highlights the relationship between mass media, religion, and politics in the construction of post-colonial power relations, and exposed the endeavour to reshape the narratives of regimes of authenticity and the nation-state, thereby opening up new historical possibilities.

Keywords: Islam; narrative practices in film; New Order; post-colonial power relations; post-Soeharto Indonesian audio-visual media
