Chapter Summary

This chapter examines groups of houses from three different parts of the province: the village of Ulu Gedong in the Seberang district of the Jambi capital, the village of Kampung Baruh in the district of Rantau Panjang, approximately 25 km north of Bangko, and the village of Rantau Pandan, in the kabupaten of Bungo-Tebo, some 40 km to the southwest of Muara Bungo. The houses were chosen according to local perceptions of what constituted a traditional house and local opinion about which houses were the oldest in each village. Not surprisingly, therefore, the Seberang people do not associate their origins with any particular house, nor do they associate architectural features of the houses with their local or ethnic identity. All three sets of houses are referred to as rumah panggung and have many characteristics in common. Aspects of house use also suggest cultural similarities between the groups.
