Chapter Summary

The limas house of the South Sumatran capital Palembang is the subject of a number of studies, mainly Indonesian, about vernacular house types in Indonesia. This chapter describes the limas house through an analysis of its different facets. It presents a detailed description of the limas house, concerning its history, the process of construction, its internal partitioning and its ornamentation, and discusses its current role in society. The chapter addresses the question why this house type in particular has become the focus of renewed attention, both for the inhabitants and especially for the local government, and what consequences this may have for the future of the limas house. The information presented in the chapter is based mainly on a study of the literature and on fieldwork in Palembang, supplemented with a number of interviews of individuals in the Netherlands who either once resided in Palembang or visited there.
