Chapter Summary

This introductory chapter presents an overview of the concepts discussed in this book. The book discusses popular and critical success of Ken Loach's film Land and Freedom when it came out in 1995. The book focuses on Catalan circumstances that led to war, the 19 July events that led to the failure of the military coup, the revolution itself, the political and religious repression, the evolution of the political conflict, the military aspects of the war, and the final defeat and its repercussions. It considers everything that determined the history of those two-and-a-half years of war in Catalonia. The book offers a critical approach to a period of history that has had an enormous impact on many generations of Catalans and Spaniards, and even on the lives of thousands of international combatants.
