Chapter Summary

The most important consequence of the 19 July movement in Catalonia was the sudden rise of the armed masses, and with this transfer of power to the streets came a socio-political disintegration that took any real authority or strength from the Republic's official institutions. On 21 July, the Generalitat provided the new Central Committee of Anti-fascist Militias of Catalonia with a veneer of legality by decreeing it in the Official Bulletin of the Generalitat. The Anti-fascist Committee, reflecting Catalonia's new revolutionary situation, passed its first resolutions such as revolutionary order, and all member organisations of the Anti-fascist Committee defended it, and night teams were especially rigorous against those attempting to challenge revolutionary order. In creating the Anti-fascist Committee, all the anti-fascist organisations of Catalonia had essentially agreed to form a new centre of power able to respond to the demands of war and revolution.
