Chapter Summary

The outbreak of war profoundly transformed Catalonia's social and economic life and affected both public and private spheres. Along with these transformations, subtle changes could be seen in urban areas, especially in industrial centres. The Catalan Economic Advisory Council was created 'to appropriately structure and normalise the Catalan economy and solve the grave economic problems that have arisen'. The Catalan Economic Advisory Council first set about defining its objectives and philosophy in a declaration of principles known as the 'National Plan for Socialist Transformation'. The plan's eleven resolutions accounted for virtually all aspects of the Catalonian economy such as monopolise foreign trade in order to avoid attacks on the new economic order from outside and seize and collectivise establishments abandoned by owners. One of the social transformations that most influenced wartime propaganda was the new social image of women.
