Chapter Summary

The May events in Catalonia had profound political repercussions both for Catalonia and for the Republic as a whole. It gave right-wing socialists an opportunity within the regulations of the party to mount an offensive in the party as well as in the socialist trade union. The May events also dealt a blow to the anarcho-syndicalists. The CNT still had significant influence within the Catalan working class, as well as within the Spanish working class in general, but after the May events it completely lost the hegemony and moral authority it had enjoyed in the first months of the war. Another consequence of the May events was the progressive loss of power suffered by the Catalan Generalitat. The Generalitat had already lost control of defence and public order during the May events, and afterwards its power declined even further.
