Chapter Summary

The significant changes in the Republican rearguard after the May Events profoundly affected the Aragon front. The Republican offensive that had begun on 6 July at Brunete, on the Madrid front, did succeed in halting the enemy's advance, bringing about the retreat of Franco's troops and aviation toward the central sector. In the hope of alleviating the pressure of Franco's offensive in the North, the Republican Government organised a new campaign on the Aragon front, this time against Zaragoza. The Zaragoza offensive was organised by General Vicente Rojo, who was becoming the strategic leader of the Republican army, and it was carried out by Sebastián Pozas, in command of more troops than had ever been deployed on the Aragon front. The loss of the northern front deprived the Republic of an important industrial region, rich in raw materials. Furthermore, the Republic was left with seaports only on the Mediterranean coast.
