Chapter Summary

This appendix of the book deals with the failure of the Military Insurrection in Barcelona. The army units had to confront fierce resistance from the workers and from popular organisations, as well as from the security forces of the Catalan government, the Generalitat. The subversive movement had begun, starting with an open shootout between Assault and Security Guards and the subversive forces from the Pedralbes Barracks, where the Thirteenth Infantry Regiment was housed, and the soldiers from Tarragona Street, the Tenth Cavalry Regiment. Due to the numerical superiority of the subversive forces and the element of surprise, the rebels succeeded in occupying the telephone exchange building after a brutal fight. As was agreed by the workers' organisations, as soon as it was verified there were insurgent troops in the streets of Barcelona, a general strike was called and supported by all the workers' organisations.

Keywords: Generalitat; Barcelona; general strike; military insurrection; subversive movement; workers' organisations
