This chapter provides commentary on Protocol I adopted additional to the Geneva Conventions in 1977 to provide effective protection for victims of armed conflicts. Articles of this Protocol present details on general principles and scope of application, beginning and end of application, legal status of the parties to the conflict, appointment of protecting powers and of their substitute, and qualification of personnel facilitating the application of the conventions and of this Protocol.
