Chapter Summary

This chapter consists of three sections: "general protection", "medical transportation" and "missing and dead persons". The purpose of the chapter is to plug a number of loopholes in, and to remedy certain deficiencies of, provisions of the Geneva Conventions relating to the protection of the wounded, the sick and the shipwrecked, medical personnel, units and transports, and to missing and dead persons. Many of the new provisions add some specifiic details to the Conventions or extend the scope of application of the existing provisions. The full extent of protection for the victim only becomes clear if both old and new provisions are considered together. The commentary on the individual Articles will indicate in detail what they add to the provisions of the Conventions.
