Chapter Summary

This conclusory chapter presents the research focus, findings and recommendations relevant to the discussions on WTO presented in this book. The research was to explore, beyond prevailing perceptions and impressions, the level and substantive content of individual and collective participation of the 42 African Members at the World Trade Organization (WTO), from 1995 when the WTO was established to 2010, in the three core areas of WTO activities: the Doha negotiations, WTO regular committee work, and dispute settlement. Although this research undertook an empirical approach, its main focus was on participation in the WTO- a rules-based system grounded on legal Agreements binding on every Member. A range of recommendations revolve around the principal African actors at the WTO, the process and substance of African WTO participation, emergent best practices and, technical assistance and capacity building. The conclusion underlines the importance of trade policy and reform for African growth, development, the rule of law and governance issues.

Keywords: African WTO participation; dispute settlement; Doha negotiations; regular committee work
