Chapter Summary

This chapter first analyses the various natural features (geological formations, morphology and topography, climate, water resources, soils, vegetation) that have shaped the present landscape of this region (Epicnemidian Locris) of Greece. Studying them is relevant because of the decisive role they played in History by determining the types of human occupation and the ways in which the societies of the past used the land, which were strongly conditioned by the environment. Next, the chapter discusses what this landscape was like in the past and discovers the most important changes in the evolution of its physical environment. To achieve this, the authors have based their work on geomorphological observations made in the field, the consultation of geological and seismotectonic maps, aerial photography, the analysis of drainage networks and the use of various analytical techniques (granulometric, mineralogical), to examine accumulations of debris.
