Chapter Summary

The Ajdabiya and Brega theater of military operations experienced pivotal battles that helped determine the outcome of the conflict. One of the prominent characteristics of this theater was the long stalemate between Qadhafi and thuwar forces. It was the entrenched nature of the fighting in and around Ajdabiya and Brega that led to this region becoming the critical front for the rebels that kept the Qadhafi forces from advancing further into eastern Cyrenaica. There were documented cases of the use of landmines by Qadhafi forces in Ajdabiya and Brega , and some evidence of the use of cluster munitions in Ajdabiya. Reports also indicate the presence of foreign fighters in Ajdabiya and Brega, including a contingent of young soldiers from Niger and the presence of Qadhafi forces reportedly of Chadian and Nigerian origin.
