Chapter Summary

Within Second Temple sapiential texts, for example, wisdom is associated with apocalyptic knowledge, the Mosaic Torah, creation, Israelite history, human perception, the lives of the ancients, and the raz nihyeh, "the mystery that is to be". Sapiential texts draw upon a wide variety of sources from a wide variety of genres legal, historical, sapiential, hymnic, prophetic and apocalyptic. This chapter articulates the relationship between "wisdom" and "torah" within the sapiential texts found at Qumran, and relates the findings to earlier wisdom traditions. It focuses on two texts: 4QBeatitudes (4Q525) and 4QSapiential Admonitions B (4Q185).The chapter is limited to these texts, because Beatitudes and Sapiential Admonitions B are the only Qumran sapiential texts that explicitly relate wisdom with law. It shows that they offer something new to our understanding of the varied affiliations of wisdom to Torah in the wisdom literature of the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple period.

Keywords: 4QBeatitudes (4Q525); 4QSapiential Admonitions B (4Q185); Hebrew Bible; Qumran; Sapiential Texts; Second Temple period; Torah; wisdom
