Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Aposynagōgos and the Historical Jesus in John: Rethinking the Historicity of the Johannine Expulsion Passages contains the table of contents and acknowledgements. The book designates collectively the Johannine aposynagōgos passages (John 9:22, 12:42, 16:2). Johannine aposynagōgos passages contain the earliest extant uses of the word ἀποσυνάγωγος, an adjective that might be most woodenly translated as "from-synagogue". J. Louis Martyn proceeded to generalize this two-level reading strategy to the entirety of John's Gospel. The book discusses the Martynian traditions, and focuses on their readings of the aposynagōgos passages.
