Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of ancient names and literary sources that occur in the book Shifting Social Imaginaries in the Hellenistic Period: Narrations, Practices, and Images. The expansion of Macedonian rule under Alexander the Great and the Graeco-Macedonian elite's assumption of power across much of the Near and Middle East undoubtedly initiated a new era of encounters between East and West, which were of fundamental and long-lasting importance to the political and cultural re-organization of a geographical area that was home to various ethnic groups and political systems. The book addresses the problem of intercultural entanglements in the Hellenistic period with the aim of provoking a rethinking of our assumptions regarding what we define as 'Hellenism'.

Keywords: Hellenism; Macedonian rule
