Western-style music education was the inspiration for Indonesian music institutions, the first of which was the Konservatori Karawitan Indonesia, established in Solo, Central Java, in 1950. The aim of these institutions was to study, teach and preserve traditional music using contemporary methods, within the framework of the building of a national culture after independence. Books, articles and music transcriptions by Dutch researchers were used as reference works for several educational and political aims.
