Chapter Summary

The metaphysical work by ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baġdādī’ offers an example of striking consistency with the original metaphysical project elaborated. This chapter presents the framework within which his metaphysical work should be considered, the commentaries and works of the Hellenizing Arabs which formed both the direct and indirect Arabic tradition of Aristotle's Metaphysics. It first provides an overview of the Greek tradition of this Aristotelian treatise, that is, the making of the Metaphysics as a unitary monograph, as well as an overview of the Greek commentaries. Then, the chapter considers the first stage of the translation and reception of the Metaphysics in the Arabic-speaking world to al-Kindī and his treatise On First Philosophy, and Ṯābit ibn Qurra and his Concise Exposition of Lambda. Finally, the chapter focuses on Avicenna's metaphysical training, his contribution to metaphysics, and the different reactions to his thought in the post-Avicennian philosophical tradition in the Muslim East.
