Chapter Summary

Latin America is one of the subordinated regions of the imperialist system. Its economic, social, political and cultural processes are soundly conditioned by its position. This chapter attempts to achieve a critical approach to Lenin's work that may well produce an appropriate framework for tackling present realities. For Lenin, the main process that gave birth to imperialism was "the displacement of capitalist free competition by capitalist monopoly". Concentration of capital creates monopolies, and hence imperialism is a necessary result of capital development. In Marx, the concentration and centralization of capital respond to capital's tendency towards increasing the level of exploitation of labor. Capitalism was introduced through industrial colonialism that would become an inherent condition of Latin America's economic trajectory. Industrial colonialism contains the social and political factors necessary for its own reproduction, not only outside but also inside underdeveloped countries.

Keywords: capitalism; imperialism; industrial colonialism; Latin America; Lenin; Marx; monopolies; underdeveloped countries
