Chapter Summary

New elements and perspectives both external and internal to the Union seem to justify dedicating reflections to the subject of which some aspects have, since decades, attracted the attention of authors rather than of political deciders. Some of these factors include: the role of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in financing the rescue mechanisms established from 2010 within the EU and as a member of the troika; the accelerated development of the economic, fiscal and financial pillar of the EMU; and the awareness, manifested in particular at the London G20 and Pittsburgh G20 Summits, for the necessity of reforming the governance of the so-called Bretton Woods institutions. This chapter opens with a discussion on the role and the representation of the EU and the Euro area in the IMF and the G20. It then deals with the Financial Stability Board (FSB) and the Standard Setting Bodies (SSBs).

Keywords: banking and fiscal union; Financial Stability Board (FSB); International Monetary Fund (IMF); Pittsburgh G20 Summit; Standard Setting Bodies (SSBs)
