Chapter Summary

This chapter examines Chinese women's experiences on the web rather than the role that danmei plays in the formation of homosexual identity in contemporary China. It suggests that the narrative features of danmei are flexible enough to accommodate the diversity of its Chinese fandom. The chapter investigates the lack and the surplus of meaning invested in danmei narratives by its enthusiastic followers, a word on Jinjiang's role in disseminating the genre is necessary. Jinjiang performs an important service by providing a home for danmei works. Interpretations of its ethos and ideologies vary, Web-based danmei fiction not only changes the shape of popular romance by introducing innovative literary devices such as fanwai and a different type of gender positioning, it also enables reading and writing practices that are significantly different from the norm established by print media.
