Chapter Summary

Cyrillic-Methodian studies exist in a complex historiographical context. This chapter sheds light upon some of the reasons for such complexity. First, the author considers the symbolic meanings invested in Cyril and Methodius by the Slavic world. The new tradition of Cyrillic-Methodian studies and the new interpretation which emerged regarding the activity of the two brothers fed the romantic Slavophile movement of the nineteenth century. Of notable importance for the historiography of Great Moravia and the archdiocese of Methodius was the contribution of František Palacký. As an introduction to a book which considers the origins and early life of the archdiocese, and offers new readings of already widely-used written sources, this chapter examines the different interpretations of the archdiocese of Methodius which have underpinned different hypothesis about the location of Great Moravia, through a critical assessment of the role of the sources used, with varying success, in support of different hypotheses.

Keywords: archdiocese of Methodius; Cyrillic-Methodian studies; Great Moravia; twentieth-century historiography
