Chapter Summary

The African countries have developed a common set of standards regarding the protection and promotion of human rights that are to serve as guidance for the implementation of these rights within their jurisdictions. This Article is to ensure within the difficult African societal context all African children's right to survival, protection and development "to the maximum extent possible". Within this context HIV/AIDS and child soldiers have been given the highest priority by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). In an important development, at its 45th session in 2009, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights adopted the "Resolution on the Cooperation between the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in Africa".
