Chapter Summary

This appendix contains charts which show the major submarine system suppliers from 1850 to 2012, and how they have amalgamated or divided to form today's most important submarine cable supply companies. The global cable network is composed of approximately 213 or so separate, diverse, and independent cable systems totaling about 877,122 km of fiber optic cables. Telecommunications represent only part of the value of modern submarine cables, and submarine cables are increasingly being used for other purposes. International submarine power cables are growing in importance. Submarine cables are being used in growing numbers for scientific purposes.
