Chapter Summary

After the Institute of History and Philology moved to Sichuan, Zhou Yiliang made preparations to make contact with the Institute and proceed to Sichuan. Just at this point in time, Professor Hong Ye (William Hung) suggested him to go study in the United States at Harvard University with the support of a scholarship from the Harvard-Yenching Institute. Professor Hong's recommendation to go to Harvard, was one act with three advantages. Zhou Yiliang selfishly recognized that going to the United States would be beneficial to his research on the Six Dynasties. Initially, Zhou Yiliang had not entertained any particularly great expectation of studying Japanese language and literature at Harvard, but after meeting Professor Elisséeff, his plans changed. Elisséeff not only was proficient in speaking Japanese (he was also fluent in French, English, German, and other languages), but he had a wealth of knowledge about Japanese linguistics, literature, and art.
