Chapter Summary

Of the ten brothers and sisters in the author's family, the author endured the worst attacks during the Cultural Revolution with his younger sister Yuliang next in line. She was a professor in the Biology Department at Nankai University in Tianjin, and her husband Cha Liangzheng was a well known poet and translator. The author's father donated his entire collection of rare books to the nation, an enthusiastically patriotic expression of his taking something private and making it public, a gesture which all of his children firmly supported. In 1973 the author joined a delegation of the Sino-Japanese Friendship Association led by Comrade Liao Chengzhi to visit Japan. In 1982 he was invited as a Luce scholar to the United States, his first trip back in forty-six years since leaving that country and returning to China. He spent seven months at the Berkeley campus of the University of California.
