Chapter Summary

This chapter begins with a brief discussion on the guilt feeling of the author for having helped Freeport at Mimika, since the presence of the company brought no benefits to the people and only damaged their natural surroundings and environment. It discusses the author's experience of moving the sub-district capital in order to be closer to his community, his education at OSIBA, and his service at the Kokonao, and later at Manokwari as the secretary of the Regional Development Planning Agency (BAPPEDA). The chapter also describes the hardships faced by the people after the transfer of the administration from the Dutch to the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA), and the implementation of the Act of Free Choice. Since the Reformasi in Indonesia developmental agencies have begun to exist though they are not functional yet. The chapter ends with a discussion on the role of church in Papuan community development.
