Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a technical note elevant ot the discussion on the general-system model for social-ecology dynamics presented in this book Critical Practice from Voltaire to Foucault, Eagleton and Beyond: Contested Perspectives. The note clarifies the architecture of a general-system model that underwrites author's commentary in the book concerning the organization of society, its critique and potential. The model is used to provide an architectonic language for specifying the strategy and methods of critical practice. In addition to providing a static representation of any social-cultural system, the model is intended to highlight the historical nature of such systems, by drawing attention to the social-ecology dynamics. A logic of macro and micro system architecture necessarily applies for all general-system models: each domain is both a sub-structure of some larger system, and internally sub-structurable according to the same technical-organizational-symbolic (T-O-S) configuration. The structure of the model was inspired by a somewhat similar one developed by Otis Dudley Duncan.

Keywords: critical practice; François-Marie Arouet Voltaire; general-system model; Michel Foucault; Otis Dudley Duncan; social-cultural system; technical-organizational-symbolic (T-O-S) configuration; Terry Eagleton
