Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book Geometridae lbericae. The book includes information on the 589 species of geometrids which are considered to be present in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic archipelago (Andorra, Portugal and Spain, with the Balearic Islands). Geometrids are lepidopterans of variable size, ranging from a wingspan of just 9 mm, as in ldaea nexata, to the 50 mm of Gnophos furvatus, or nearly 57 mm, in the case of some first generation specimens of Hypomecis roboraria, the largest species of the lbero-Balearic fauna. The family Geometridae is subdivided, according to current systematic criteria, into nine subfamilies: Archiearinae, Oenochrominae, Ennominae, Alsophilinae, Orthostixinae, Desmobathrinae, Geometrinae, Sterrhinae and Larentiinae. The book presents both the original descriptions and papers and isolated data on various faunistic and systematic aspects directly related to the Ibero-Balearic fauna.
