Chapter Summary

This sermon proceeds to describe author's life through six attributes that apply to the sun. This sermon needs to judge that his departure from the world happened was for the sake of his merit and his goodness, but to the detriment of his generation and his charge. For, that which the Creator does against nature is called a "wonder" (peleʿ), the letters of which are the reverse of the letters [in the letter] "alef". Scripture says, Behold,I will again do a marvellous work (le-hafli) and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish etc. This is truly a "wonderful" (pelaʿim) downfall since the wonder and this reversal is regarded as a fall. After the "wonderful" downfall achieved by descending several degrees in the ranks of wisdom through marvelous work and wonder, one shall surely return to the wonderful level of wisdom which Moses sought.
