Chapter Summary

The beings can indeed be defined as living with a certain time and independence with respect to subjective views. Merleau-Ponty refers to sedimentation process as "diacritical" including Saussure's linguistics. Husserl himself showed that the proto-founders had an incomplete understanding of what would become the geometry: the idea of a rational infinite totality and the formalization of the method. In the Phenomenology of Perception Merleau-Ponty already identified this anonymous poetic creation without a plan. In the Critique of Pure Reason, reflection finds its starting point in the presentation of a Kantian distinction between the three mental faculties. Sensitivity is the ability to receive impressions, and the understanding is the ability to produce concepts. Imagination is then defined as intermediary acts. Merleau-Ponty finally gives an explicitly ontological scope for reflection on the imaginary. Merleau-Ponty fully assumes the disconcerting nature of ontology.
