Chapter Summary

This chapter presents an overview on the paintings of Merleau-Ponty and Michel Henry. Art can arise only through human corporeality. In other words, the ability to create artistic forms is only given the subjectivity to be embodied. In addition, the aesthetic experience is significant as it is close to the essence of language. Merleau-Ponty shows that it is the body itself open to the world and other whole that has an artistic power. In the design of Merleau-Ponty there are several references to the art of Paul Cézanne, while Henry instead addresses painting by Wassily Kandinsky. Henry presupposes that one can attain life through art. However, life is accessible only by the world. Henry often emphasizes that every phenomenon is lived on two modes: internal and external.
