Chapter Summary

To make an ethnohistory of political-religious process in Morocco, it is necessary to identify the historical matrix in which social references and cultural symbols are developed and took effect. It is not a question of making an exhaustive history of the relationship of religion to politics, but rather to sketch heuristic archaeology of mystical decisive role in political legitimation process. If multiple arguments of analysis relative to development of cult of saints are fair, hermeneutics, which carries and frames remains, however, captive of ambiguous theory of survivals. In this chapter, the author informs that the development of mysticism from fifteenth century has caused the decline of civilization and Islamic rationality in North Africa, and teaches, that the same mysticism, popular, fanatical and intolerant, allowed the Berbers to find, on behalf of Islam, their culture and natural religion, more humanistic and sensitive. The original text of the chapter is in French.

Keywords: cult of saints; hermeneutics; heuristic archeology; Islamic rationality; Morocco; mysticism; political legitimation process
