Chapter Summary

The idea has long prevailed among internationalists as in legal historians about the origins of international law that fatherhood was returning to Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), his assertion and development of a systematic legal order based on reason and valid for all nations regardless of their faith appearing as the answer to the challenges of faith of Christianity linked to the Protestant Reformation and the religious wars break that follows. This view, which will be predominant for decades and on which we will question again after the Second World War, however, will eventually be gradually called into question by the end of the 19th century. Teutonico-Polish debate over the legitimacy of the war against the heathens, carried between 1414 and 1418 before the "foundations of Christianity" that represents the Council of Constance, appears closely related to the first centuries history of Poland as of that of Prussia.
