Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Sharīʿa in Africa Today: Reactions and Responses contains the table of contents, list of maps, acknowledgements, technical note and the preface. The book examines various aspects of sharīʿa debates in sub-Saharan Africa, carried out by Africans, both Muslims and Christians. The debate on the new Nigerian constitution during the second half of the 1970s inspired the first 'Grand Debate' on the future role of Islamic law in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was only after the return to democracy in 1999 that twelve states of Northern Nigeria started to re-implement 'full-sharīʿa', that is, all aspects of Islamic law in personal and in criminal matters. The map section includes the map of Africa showing countries covered in the book.

Keywords: Federal Republic of Nigeria; Islamic law; sharīʿa debates
