Chapter Summary

After the horrors of World War II the German education has a concern to revise the knowledge base in educational lexicons. Two German-language encyclopaedias entitled Encyclopaedia of Education was issued at the beginning of the 1950s. The Swiss special education and the eugenics movement were in the first half of the 20th century closely linked to the corresponding movements in the German-speaking countries. The destruction of human beings in Germany during the Second World War because of their race, creed, or political opinion was an unprecedented act of cruelty. The legalized forced sterilization and mass murder of people with intellectual disabilities must be considered in this context. The relevant analysis for the items of special education has been defined by the Dictionary of Pedagogy. In Encyclopaedia of Education, 1398 lemmas that do not denote a place and personal names are listed. The original text of the chapter is in German.
