Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of names of modern authors relevant to the analysis of the reception history about Samson in the later Jewish, Christian and Islamic literature, along with his presentation in figurative and performing arts. Samson is a peculiar character. He is the most powerful major judge of the Israelite judges and three whole chapters in the book of Judges are allocated to him. He does demonstrate many features of weakness, not the least of which is a weakness for the charms of women. The different aspects of Samson's character lived on in the later traditions of this judge, in ancient and modern literature, in music, in fine arts and in film.
